The closest village to the campsite is Newbiggin, where you will find a collection of farms, dwellings and holiday cottages. While the only services here are a public telephone box, Victorian letterbox built into the wall and a noticeboard, it is a lovely, peaceful circular stroll from the campsite and even has its own waterfall.
Just a short stroll away, Thoralby is a typical dales farming community. From here you can head off in various directions along footpaths and bridleways, or catch the bus to go further afield.
Considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in the Yorkshire Dales National Park with a large village green and no through road. West Burton has much to offer visitors including a lively pub (with Sky Sports), children’s play area on the village green, a traditional family butchers shop, cat pottery and the much photographed and admired Cauldron Falls waterfall.
A very popular village and rightly so, the spectacular waterfalls draw visitors from around the world, they also featured in the hit film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. In relatively easy walking distance from the campsite, just borrow a map from reception to choose your route or follow the footpath markers. There is parking for cars and longer vehicles at both sides of the river. Visit the National Park Centre for more in depth information about the area, the staff are brilliant here and very helpful. If you are visiting with children, ask for a trail sheet to complete during your stroll around the waterfalls and ancient woods. Aysgarth has 2 pubs, 4 cafes, an Edwardian Rock Garden a garage and the fuel station also houses a well-stocked general store with off licence and the very recent addition of a post office.
